Risk Assessment of the Incidence of Diabetes Mellitus according to Body Size Phenotype in Korean Adults: A Prospective Cohort Studies

Abstract
Objective: The present study aimed to assess the risk of incidence of diabetes mellitus depending on the body size phenotype of Korean adults.

Methods: This longitudinal study included 6,405 non-diabetes mellitus subjects from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study (KoGES), which was tracked every two years from 2001 to 2016. Analysis was performed using the log-rank test, life table method, Cox¡¯s proportional hazards regression model. IBM SPSS Statistics version 26.0 was used for the analysis.

Results: Compared with the MHNW group, the HR for the risk of incidence of diabetes mellitus was 1.12(MHOW group), 1.36(MHO group), 1.87(MUNW group), 2.48(MUOW group), 2.72(MUO group) in males, while it was 1.16(MHOW group), 1.68(MHO group), 1.89(MUNW group), 2.13(MUOW group), 3.05(MUO group) in females.

Conclusion: The results of the present study are expected to aid the development of interventions and policies for the prevention of diabetes mellitus and for obesity management in Korea in the future.
